Winter
Winter (2017)
She enters her crate
as the last light dims,
and makes up her bed
for the winter.
Instinct guiding her
toward the place
where she will spend
the season.
Outside,
the world continues
people hurry
they overlook.
It doesn’t matter
that few will understand.
Something older
has called her home.
Trusting what she cannot
yet see,
she curls into the dark.
The animals know this time
the seeds know it too
the long gathering
beneath the surface.
What appears dormant
is preparing.
So she settles deeper
into the dark
listening
for what winter
has come to teach.
